Frequent Coercion
When I was at seminary in the USA, we studied crime and punishment, of all things. The US police were already very rigorous (more than ten years ago) -- for instance, an old lady was arrested in Pasadena at the time, for crossing the road too slowly. But our focus was less on the rigour of the police, and more on the inability of the system to move people through. In the last forty years, there has been a 500% increase in incarceration in the USA: 2.2 million people in jail today. The political philosopher Yves Simon (pictured) wrote, "Frequent use of coercion evidences weakness." OBSERVATION: What kind of weakness is another question.
