Somewhere in the world, my dot.com author website went live yesterday. I read a Wikipedia article this morning, which puts one's chances of publication through a traditional publisher at 1 in 200: out of 1 000 books which are put to agents, five will land a publisher, and one of those will be a winner. If that were an exam, it would have a 99.5% failure rate. OBSERVATION: That agrees with my own estimate, which was less than 1% chance of publication. But there is an elderly agent who points out that, actually, it's not that hopeless. If you see the sub-standard material that gets presented, that accounts for most failure.
