Ethical Conundrum

I had an eventful day yesterday. In the evening, I found a man with two children, broken down some 80 km (50 mi) from help. We needed wire. I had a wire clipper with me. I saw a downed power line nearby. But to reach it, I needed to climb a farmer’s fence. Climbing the fence, I cut myself in a few places, and bloodied a brand new shirt. The power line had melted through—however, the wire wasn’t suitable. But I could cut a farmer’s fence. That would get them back on the road. OBSERVATION: What was the decision? What would you have done?
