I have continued to attend my old city Church on a regular basis – as I did this morning. I confine my observations here to the Sunday worship. On the one hand, I received a warm welcome, the atmosphere was good, the sermon was good, the appearance of the place was good, and the indigent felt at home there. On the other hand (compared with nearly ten years ago) attendance is down to about a third, diversity is way down (age, race, language, and so on), and the worship is no longer Congregational (that is, involving the congregation). Most of those who were there today attended under my ministry. OBSERVATION: Around the close of my ministry, I heard that I was holding the Church back. This turned out not to be the case.
