Nobody Heard Me
I found an old letter today -- with letters that my mother kept. I was writing home from De Villiers Graaff boarding school. Shortly after I wrote it, I was admitted to Groote Schuur hospital in Cape Town, where I spent the next two weeks. I was removed from boarding school after that. The rigours and the cruelty were just too much. I reported that I had been made to run around a rugby field, and "my left leg gave in". The next day, I was "limping along" but I was forced to do gym, because "you have to have a medical certificate to be excused". I was suffering "terrible pain ... very bad". "My legs are playing me up." Nobody heard me. OBSERVATION: Not a day goes by today, that I do not feel the after-effects of that abuse.
