This is a favourite photo (not my own) which epitomises cultural differences for me. It is a Maori boy on the right with (apparently) a European child on the left. This photo has appeared all over. The reticence of the European child, the forwardness of the Maori child. The closed eyes of the European child, the friendly stare of the Maori child. It reminds me of my first encounter with my father-in-law. I didn't know who he was when I met him. He briefly took my hand, then dropped it. I spoke to him. He didn't speak to me. I looked at him. He didn't look at me. Who was he? In his own culture, it was respect.
