I took this chiaroscuro photo of a Congregational deaconess on New Year's Eve, conducting a New Year's Eve service. The small house where she conducted it was crowded out. Typically, nearly every person present takes part in the service. She said to me: "You have been with us long enough now. I expect you to take part this time." I did, and in Afrikaans. I gave a brief message about placing one's hope in God. OBSERVATION: All over South Africa, such services are a tradition in our Black and Coloured communities. (Candles are not a part of the tradition, they are a necessity). You may click on the photo to enlarge to 110k.
