I struggled yesterday to revise a chapter of my metaphysic, on the scientific method. I wanted one good example which would show that the isolation of individual mechanisms in scientific experiments is simultaneously (in reverse) the isolation of the world. I couldn't find it -- although I knew that there must be examples everywhere.
I read about fifty pages on the subject, and went to sleep. In the morning, the answer was there, as if given in a dream, and it was better than the answer I had been looking for. OBSERVATION: For me, it works with sermon writing, too. When I prepare a sermon, I do many pages of background reading on a Wednesday. I go to sleep, then write on a Thursday morning.
