There is a strange reality one often encounters: people may be unwilling to see evil when it stares them in the face. I shall describe this by way of a real example. A man I knew was charged with abusing children. He pleaded guilty, and was jailed. Another man had witnessed him many times picking up children, and was closely familiar with the case. But he was unwilling to believe that it had happened. It had to be an awful mistake, a great folly, a terrible misunderstanding -- something – but there was no crime.
