Equitable Distribution

This photo, taken some years ago, shows the distribution of possessions in a Xhosa clan, following a death. There was something quite uncanny about this. It was as if each item had already been assigned to someone -- already had their name on it -- although it did not. Each item, too, was perfectly desired by each person, so that there was an equitable distribution without any discernible decision making! A Leica camera picked out the colour red.
