Equitable Distribution

After a death in the Xhosa culture, and after the burial, there is a clan gathering to distribute the deceased's possessions. I was privileged to observe this recently (pictured). There was something uncanny about it. It was as if each item had already been assigned to someone, already had their name on it, although it did not. Each item was perfectly desired by each person, so that there was an (almost) equitable distribution without any discernible decision making. OBSERVATION: I removed a person from this photo, who told me in advance that she was camera shy.
