‘Not My Dream’

I took this photo earlier this year, during major protests in Cape Town. A shop had shut its doors, and put up this poster in the window. Next to it, on the street, stood a Coloured man squinting into the sun, a silver chain around his neck and sunglasses on his head, holding a large South African flag. OBSERVATION: President Zuma said at the time: "Don't use the comrades who have died as a platform to perpetuate disunity." He seemed to be objecting to the practice of turning funerals into political platforms, although the deceased themselves, as comrades, were political. The South African flag has strangely become a symbol of resistance, but also unity.
