Veldfire Protea

I took this closeup this morning of a local pincushion protea, the magnificent Veldfire, or Leucospermum glabrum. If you're in Cape Town and should wish to see the real thing, they're in the Green Point Urban Park. The flower is thought to be a hybrid between the Ember Pincushion and the Grey Tree Pincushion. In a doctoral dissertation by John Rourke (1970:255) it is a "putative" hybrid, first noted in Du Toit's Kloof in 1921. OBSERVATION: In other words, it is anyone's guess as to whether it is an original or a hybrid. You may click on the image to enlarge.
