Here's a problem with an afterthought. We asked the builder who built our little cottage in the country to leave the back door steps for now -- we'd think of what to do in time. This is what we did (right) -- but the steps were now built on a separate foundation. The foundations being laid in clay, the steps now part from the house or rejoin it, depending on the season. It's a crack big enough to admit a lot of rain water, and it can't simply be filled.
