Windows Won't Die

I run the Linux operating system on all my computers, as I have done for more than ten years. Last night I left my computer on, without the charger plugged in. During the night it died. Its final act was (apparently) to restore its Windows boot file. But I had erased Windows -- so it reported a boot file with nothing to boot. I needed to wrest back control of my computer, which I did with a Refind bootable USB. OBSERVATION: I have Linux on USB, too, so that I can take control of the computer (almost any computer) from a USB port if I need to.
