Suppose I Am Wrong

(Continued from Misleading the Church). If the treasurer told the truth -- that he had the audit -- then the auditor committed a criminal offence. But if the auditor told the truth -- that there was no audit -- then the treasurer lied to the Church. If the auditor lied (I do not think he did), he would almost certainly be handed over to the Commercial Crimes Unit. However, that would point back to the treasurer. This happened with the previous auditor -- and in that case, the same treasurer confessed in writing to "wrongdoing", together with five others. OBSERVATION: The audit is the most important guarantee that, among other things, a Church's assets are safe. In this case, the assets are worth many millions of rands -- or to a developer, more.
