Unsafe Gospel

In my experience of ministry, many churchgoers begin their spiritual journey fairly indifferent to the gospel. But they awaken to spiritual things -- and then one of two things may happen. They may miss salvation, and because they missed it, become (still within the Church) hostile to a gospel of salvation -- or they may receive salvation with a passion, and from that day on have a clear understanding of spiritual things. Perhaps this is what Hebrews 6 refers to when it speaks about those "who have once been enlightened", yet have missed salvation. The famous preacher Charles Spurgeon said that unless God protected him after he preached the gospel, "this hour might be the last that I should preach". OBSERVATION: The "hostility" need not be overt, and usually it is not.
