In my last year in urban ministry, our Church budgeted for a large
deficit. Just as one has a staff budget, missions budget, property
budget, and so on, we had (unusually) a deficit
budget. The closer we
got to meeting this budget (which is, recording a large
deficit), the more precarious it looked. Our diaconate put a freeze on
spending, warned that they would slash salaries, and cancelled year-end bonuses. At our lowest point, I remarked to a deaconess: "God will do as He always does. There will
be enough for bonuses. You'll see." That year, my twentieth in urban ministry, we recorded the largest income we ever saw under my ministry there (and probably for 30-40 years in that Church). OBSERVATION: Faith is
required.
