Countless Citations

My esteemed advisers omitted to tell me that my magnum opus required formal citations. Until now, they have been informal. For example: "Yves Simon wrote that we prioritise the principles of social life." Was I summarising him? Quoting him? Translating him? Was it a book? A paper? A video? And so on.  Here is what I came up with, after a considerable search: "Simone, Yves R. 1962. A general theory of authority. Notre Dame, IN: University of Notre Dame Press." I was paraphrasing him. Anyway, embarking on my task today, I estimated I would need to find two citations per chapter, through forty chapters. But as I get into it, it looks more like ten citations per chapter, and if one includes my endnotes, that's up to 50 pages and 1,000 citations. OBSERVATION: Apparently it is all a fairly academic exercise anyway. Publishers wish to avoid being sued for some author's quote, somewhere.
