News Paywalls

A number of newspapers and news channels have been putting up paywalls in South Africa. There are various reasons why one does or doesn't do that, and why it succeeds or not. But here are a few moral concerns.
• A headline goes up, and the rest is behind a paywall. One has no way of assessing the headline.
• Public interest information may go behind a paywall, with proscriptions on sharing it.
• Paywalls part with the traditional role of the press: free speech, the right to know, and so on.
• The material behind paywalls may be more deliberately targeted than general newspapers.
