Invention of the Camera
I have often asked myself, when I have invented things, when it could have been invented. Usually, a lot earlier. Then, by extension, when could other things have been invented, based on the knowledge we already had at the time? This week I worked out when the first photograph could (I think) have been taken. The answer: 129 BC. It would have been a slow process, but one then had the camera obscura (Mo Tzu), and a method for distinguishing three grades of brightness (Hipparchus). One also had methods similar to modern halftones, and one knew about grid layouts. Thus one might have known enough to translate brightness to halftones, with a camera obscura and grid. It may have taken a week to take a photo, but it could have been done. OBSERVATION: We could have had photos of Cleopatra, Julius Caesar, Emperor Zhao ... not to speak of ancient scenery.
