The last story that my mother told us before she died, was of a visit to a relative in Denmark, when she was in her teens. But she was a German girl, and Germany had occupied Denmark just a few short years before, during World War II. She was advised to be very cautious -- she would be among former foes. After a few days, she summoned the courage to visit the local bakery. To her surprise, they welcomed this German girl with delight. After that, she was encouraged to explore some more. Everywhere, she said, she was welcomed gladly.
