Ants and Bread

My mother said that, if ants were interested in certain foods, they were good to eat. Here, in a coastal suburb of Cape Town, ants have no interest in bread that I buy at a nearby supermarket. But if I buy it at the local bakery -- simply called The Bakery -- they swarm both wheat and rye bread. OBSERVATION: Ergo, it should pass as excellent bread. An enterprising student, Elisa B, for Science Fair, studied what attracts ants to bread. The answer was overwhelmingly: if the bread is made with a little sugar in de-ionised water, without preservatives.
