No Soup

The Church is to help the poor. But what if the Church is the poor? Here's (another) example. A woman told me how her Church had run a soup kitchen. But as her suburb slipped deeper and deeper into poverty, so the Church’s resources shrank, and the queues grew longer and longer. They tried to stretch what they had -- but what good is it, she said, if all that people get at the end of the day is flavoured water? Eventually, the Church quit. She said a friend of hers refused to eat any more soup, as a sign of faith that the soup kitchen would re-open.
