POSTSCRIPT: If one has received invitations, the chances of acceptance are said to be about one in ten, for each invitation. This is very different to the chances of any given submission succeeding: said to be about 1 in 10,000.

Submission
Today I submitted my new book to agents and publishers -- with trepidation! I submitted it to ten of them, to be precise. Each of these had invited submission of the manuscript. OBSERVATION: I began with a long list of (possibly) suitable agents and publishers. I took a third of this list, and submitted queries. This yielded the invitations. On the basis of my complete list, there may be the potential for 30 invitations. It looks like a promising start -- but publishing is fickle. AI, for what it is worth, claims that my new book "has the potential to be a cult classic".
