Hope For Others
My late wife Mirjam was an executive editor (subject: religious freedom). One of her final concerns as editor, which she was unable to see through, was that religious
rights and freedoms are not enough, and the focus on such rights and freedoms is
inordinate – in view of the people who actually suffer under
persecution, and their pastoral needs. OBSERVATION: The problem seems to me to be typical of Kantian or Rawlsian ethics, which focus more on the imperative than the present reality. Rawls stated in his final work: "There is hope for those at another time and place."
