I preached on a text -- Titus 2 -- which contained some words about
temperance. But every time I mentioned temperance, the congregation laughed. I explained: "Alcohol was a problem in those days, according to the history books -- I don't know whether it still is." More laughter. I mentioned it to another minister. He said: "In my Church
laughter is banned, never mind
alcohol!" OBSERVATION: Personally, I interpret temperance as moderation, although in some cases (and some cultures, perhaps) abstinence would be advisable.
