Translation From The Pulpit

In urban ministry, one can't afford to simply get up and preach, nor can one afford to invite someone else to simply get up and preach. In the suburbs, or in the country, one's audience is likely to be on the same plane culturally and linguistically as oneself, and one doesn't need to worry about it. Not so in urban ministry. Everything needs to be translated to a "cosmopolitan speak". In a sense, preaching then becomes an act of translation, all the time. OBSERVATION: People sometimes think that, because I am a philosophy editor, my sermons must use rarefied concepts and language. But I do "cosmopolitan speak".
