I went to buy a Leica camera this morning, advertised as new by a leading retailer in Cape Town. It pre-dated the fall of the rand, so it looked like a good buy. I also took along my laptop. I checked if the camera box had been opened. It had. I checked the number of photos the camera had taken. Its file system reported 1 001. I took it outside and took photos of the sky -- which to the eye seemed to be a fairly even cloud cover. I took the camera inside again, called up the photos on my computer, and applied "Equalize". One sees the blemish on the image on the right, at dead centre. They said they would give me R1 000 off. But for something that expensive, and that impeccable, a blemish will not do. OBSERVATION: It's a good routine to follow when seeking a digital camera. I hadn't expected that the test would deliver a "no" this morning.
