Being close to the action in the world of philosophy -- a member of the board of The Philosopher, and an editor of Philosophical Investigations -- people ask me what the trends are. A major trend (but not everywhere) is the return of religion -- although not as it once was. There are a number of reasons for this: • People now recognise that religion has made a valuable contribution to philosophy, both historically and philosophically. • People no longer believe in total descriptions of reality. Religion is readmitted as one among many. OBSERVATION: Sometimes, one may find a passionate defence of the place of religion in philosophy today, even by those who are not religious. The old-fashioned rationalism and modernism have declined in favour.
