Getting By With English

My (then) Swiss father-in-law was a famous entomologist -- there are two species named after him. So he attended many international conferences. For this purpose, he said, he had learnt two English phrases to cover all conversations: "I see," and "If not, why not." OBSERVATION: But he probably was joking. He will have known more English than that. I only remember the name of one of the species: Macrosiphum alpinum Meier.

POSTSCRIPT: I think the other species is Macrosiphum silvaticum Meier.
