Vanished Hatred

A story in the news in South Africa (Waitress Reduced to Tears) reminds me of a story which the General Secretary of the (now) Kiribati Uniting Church told me. He had dear grandparents, he said, who lived on a sunny little island, and life was fine. Suddenly Japanese soldiers appeared, and executed them. Decades later, he went to study theology in Switzerland. A female student from Japan came to shake his hand. He refused. He said: "You killed my grandparents." She burst into tears. He said that from that moment, all racial hatred left him.
