Some twenty years ago, son M, with a school friend and me, discovered an old wreck in Sea Point, Cape Town. In fact we later found out that a few people knew about it -- however we were the first to register the find. So the Heritage Trust studied the site, and ruled that it was a dump: we were free to explore it. But it was unlikely a dump. Among other things, we found gold coins and jewellery there, apart from live hand grenades and ammunition (as live as they could be more than a century later) -- hardly the kind of stuff that dumps are made of. Today son M. revisited the site with friends, and found a (presumably) diamond ring there. OBSERVATION: But don't all rush out now to find treasure. The "finds" are few and far between, and very hard work. I find an alternative theory more likely: it was a wreck, onto which people later dumped rubbish.
UPDATE: While the ring was found at the wreck site, apparently it is not linked to the wreck.
