In 2008, my vestry was searched. It was a slick job. Our Church attorney advised: "Report to the police, but don't name any suspects" (reporting to the police would, above all, protect information -- not only mine, but others'). However, before I reported to the police, a member came to see me. He revealed who did it. Someone had shown him a piece of paper which had been taken in the search. I duly reported to the police. "Are there any suspects?" they asked. "Yes. One," I said. "Who?" they asked. I said: "I have been advised not to reveal it." They said: "You are withholding information from the police, in a criminal matter. We could charge you." OBSERVATION: I hadn't understood it then, and there are many who don't understand it still. If you have information in a criminal matter -- worse, if you are a member of a committee which has power to act -- you could be charged. It may not be likely, but it is possible.
