I did some work today (editorial work) on an essay by a citizen of the Pacific, which is provisionally titled "Individualism vs. Personhood in Kiribati". It is an extract from a very interesting Master's thesis. In the Kiribati Republic, one becomes "a real or true person" (te oi n aomata) when one takes one's full and proper place among the people. It is very different to our individualistic Western thinking. OBSERVATION: And in the Africa that I know, it is much the same, the culture of "we". The photo shows traditional Kiribati dancers.
