It is by and large the custom in South Africa for people to kiss each other on the lips in greeting, both men and women, adults and children. Some who are not familiar with this custom may take affront – say, if a man kisses a woman on the lips, or a woman kisses a man on the lips, and they did not expect it. OBSERVATION: However, usually when greeting a person of European stock, people defer to European custom. Not always, though. As an example, a female minister complained to me that a male minister had walked up to her and kissed her on the lips. She was shocked.
