Someone once wrote me a negative letter about the Church. The whole of it was negative -- it was not so much a specific complaint. I replied: "My sense is that your emphasis is fairly much on human activity -- and fairly much on human failure -- yet not much, in fact, on the present involvement of God ... When one thinks on that, one may always have a sense of confidence, hope, expectancy, even joy in His deeds. Further, judged by the law, my own congregation (myself included) fails -- and so do all others. Judged by God’s gracious acts among us, I have the sense: 'Look what God has done / is doing!' -- not only through my Church, but throughout the country and subcontinent."
