There is a kind of respectful distance between races in South Africa -- good-natured, yet respectful and (kind of) formal -- which one may not even notice if one tends to gravitate towards one's own. But there are two things which have brought great warmth and sunny smiles into my life, from "other" South Africans: my largely Xhosa wife, and my humble three-wheel pickup. Even when my wife or my pick-up are not with me, I still receive the warmth and smiles. It is their presence in my life and nothing else that so often changes everything.
