People sometimes ask me what the differences are, between my culture (European) and my wife's culture (chiefly Xhosa). Here is one. In my own culture, when we communicate, we have many layers between me and the person with whom I communicate. Before we express something, or before we receive it, we filter it. My wife's culture does not do that. It is quite an extraordinary thing. Everything is given and taken "raw". OBSERVATION: Somebody asked me how I felt about that. I find it easier to get on with. But one needs to be receptive. Some might take offence.
