The elders called my wife "the Mpondo girl". This intrigued me, and after we were married I sought the facts. Mpondo was one of the great kings of Africa, the grandson of Sibiside, king of the Mbo. After Mpondo there were 26 generations. This may place King Mpondo around 1100 AD. But it goes further back than that. Sibiside was a descendant of Gubhela, who is placed 33 generations ago, or about 900 AD -- which could predate Theodoric, the first of the British royal line. E's maternal great-grandfather still bore the name Mpondo, a direct descendant of the great king, and the Mpondo kingdom still exists today, encompassing several towns. In addition to her Mpondo great-grandfather, one of E's grandparents was of Kwayi royal descent, however the last king of the Kwayi died around 1700 AD. At the moment the Kwayi are laying claim to the Xhosa throne, which is a big nation. OBSERVATION: There have been some famous modern day Mpondos, among them Oliver Tambo and Winnie Mandela.
