I find a kind of perspective in Africa -- and the Third World -- which one does not often find in the West. I met a man this morning and greeted him: "I was young, too, once." He greeted me: "And I shall be old." It reminds me of a question I asked of a Churchman: "Did you ever meet the Queen?" He replied: "On one of my many days." Or, if one announces plans, one often hears the reply: "If we both live." OBSERVATION: All of these exchanges seem to have this in common: that they think in grand terms, not merely in terms of the events or incidents of a life.
