A minister greets a lot of people in passing -- at the Church door, visiting Church groups, in the street, and so on. It would be natural to exchange mere pleasantries. I myself have routinely used such occasions to obtain telegram-style updates from people, and to be of encouragement -- above all concerning their spiritual well-being, their spiritual calling, their concerns, and their health. OBSERVATION: I think a large amount can be done through brief exchanges, and a lot can be lost by talking mere pleasantries.
