South Africa has had three parallel marriage laws. As of today, four. Wife E and I have a friend at the heart of the Women's Legal Centre, which has been pushing to have Muslim marriages recognised by the state -- so we have had some feel for the trauma behind today's High Court decision. According to News24 it was argued that, without this new law, "a range of constitutional rights, including the right to equality, were being violated". OBSERVATION: According to South African law, wife E and I were married by two of the nation's marriage laws, however one has to choose which one takes precedence. We took the Church wedding to be our wedding, in terms of the old Marriage Act.
