Depression and suicide are always close companions of a minister, through counselling. According to the World Health Organisation, suicide is steadily rising worldwide (see the graph). This has been my own experience in ministry. It is worse than the graph suggests, as this does not reflect actual suicides but rates of suicide, and does not reflect vast and growing efforts at prevention. OBSERVATION: A major factor is "capability for suicide", which basically means acceptance (see Newsweek). I have come under fire as a minister for saying we do not accept suicide, although we have every compassion. The unravelling of this position of the Church is surely contributing to an increased suicide rate.
