A Church fête has various purposes. A fête convener once said to me that a fête keeps the Church on the map. This is true. Further, it provides "bonding" in a congregation -- and many congregations are quite scattered or diverse in the nature of things. If it is a good fête, it also does a lot for the spirit of the Church. It often gets people involved who are on the periphery, or are able to contribute little in other ways. And for a minister, it is a way to talk to more people than he or she does on most occasions -- and a way of serving. I almost forgot: a fête makes money.
