My most recent philosophical essay for Pi, on the fact-value distinction, had a mediocre reception. But again, it is interesting to look at the big picture. Of all the pieces that I wrote or edited for Pi in the last few years,
• 40% are in the Top of the Pops, andThis means that the essays that I wrote or edited have done a lot better in the long run than they have in the short term. It suggests, too, that I am not a "popular" writer, and do not commission "popular" pieces. OBSERVATION: It seems curious that such a difference exists. What drives the essays which last? I think, substance. They are not as captivating as others, yet they offer more food for thought.
