My tradition of Congregationalism has been described as a "direct democracy". I once explained it to a young man like this: “Our Church is governed by the Church Meeting. The Church Meeting is a gathering of the members, all of whom have received Jesus as their Saviour. This means that they have received the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit gives spiritual life, and spiritual sight. So the person in the far corner of the Church Meeting, no matter how humble they might seem to human eyes, will have spiritual eyes to see, and might be moved by the Holy Spirit to bring a word from God. I myself am just another member.” He said, “That’s beautiful.” OBSERVATION: It is however a “direct democracy under Christ”, not just a democracy.
