A friend of mine observed that corruption in South Africa went further back than he had imagined. I knew this personally, I would estimate, fifteen years ago. Corruption is a terrible stressor, and this in turn leads people to seek counsel. Tales of very serious corruption -- up to (wait for it) half a billion rands -- were reported to me in counselling. OBSERVATION: Corruption is far more pervasive than we see through commissions of inquiry today, and in my own experience, it is often the people we truly trust. I myself had to change my approach to these things, as the minister who hears them is potentially endangered. It reminds me of the priest in the movie Soylent Green.
POSTSCRIPT: It has been said that much of the dysfunction in local institutions is as a result of corruption -- because it saps people's energy.
