Psychologists say our behaviour is controlled by mental models. Basically, we are driven by what we expect to find. In the Church, this is a very big problem. Members have expectations about all kinds of things -- ministry, drop-off, growth, conflict, methods, assets, human nature, and so on. These expectations would surely change for the better if they knew the statistics -- in other words, had a broader view. But perhaps members don't need statistics. Their expectations would surely change for the better if they took the Bible at face value. Perhaps I shall sketch some examples in a future post.
