Some time ago now, I went to our Department of Home Affairs with wife E to obtain the new South African Smart Card ID. They accepted E's application, but turned me away, because I was born in "that place" (England). Last week I asked the shadow Minister of the Interior, Haniff Hoosen, what the situation was. His office replied: "Only born South African citizens qualify for the Smart Card ID," but the Department of Home Affairs was "in the process of making it available to all citizens". In the interim, if one has to, one can replace an old ID with an old ID. OBSERVATION: I have been a citizen for most of my life. I left that place before I turned five.
