Leaving The Plateau

Early next month, my parents-in-law will be moving off the plateau, into the nearest village. For various reasons, the farmer lost heart -- drought and death and loss -- one could see the farm disintegrating before one's eyes. It's a Google satellite photo. The red dot marks my parents-in-law's home, up on the plateau. The yellow dot marks the village below. It was a primitive life up on the plateau, still a generation behind, as if there had been no new South Africa. OBSERVATION: It has been a special privilege for me to share that way of life.
